Grand Illusion - Amber Merrell

One of the most prominent themes that I noticed in this film is the humanity with which most of the characters treated each other. Despite the different nationalities represented, the movie highlights the similarities among the people portrayed. Though these countries are at war with one another, there is a recognition that they are all human and have interests and needs.

In this particular image, the two captains, Boieldieu and Rauffenstein, are having a friendly conversation despite their oppositional positions in the war. Rauffenstein immediately takes a liking to Boieldieu because they are both part of the privileged class. Thus, Rauffenstein connects with Boieldieu and gives him extra attention and leniency. The two appear to enjoy each other’s company which demonstrates how the similarities and connections between people are stronger than the differences that divide us.

This image also shows a flower in the background, a sign of beauty in this dark place, and a signal that there are so much more meaningful things in life than war. Boieldieu and Rauffenstein are also in personal range with one another. This further illustrates their ease of conversation and attitude which has overcome the boundaries that war places between them. All of this shows that goodwill and comradery can prevail through the trials of war and conflict.

  1. Good stuff here, Amber. You might look a bit more at the elements of mise en scène, objects, lighting, the frame of the window, the depth of the image. How might these further comment on the theme you identify?
