Black Girl - James Clarke

Black Girl is about a Senegalese girl who is taken to France to work as a house keeper. When Diouana arrives in France she is wearing heels, a polka-dot dress and a pearl necklace. Her real hair is hidden under a wig. In the movie, she can't speak French very well, and instead her thoughts are spoken in voiceovers. She is stripped of her cultural individuality and becomes just an immigrant of a lesser class whose sole function is to clean up after the family. This along with her constant belittlement leads to depression and her longing for her home. She decides to take matters into her own hands and kills herself so she can free herself from her slave-like captivity.

The worst and most powerful part of this story is that Diouana’s depression and desperation make death appear to be the only way for her to be free. Her dreams about living in France prove to be catastrophic and not what she expected at all. When Diouana says that the mistress lies to her it is ironic because she actually lied to herself to believe that France would give her more freedom, wealth, and a better life than her own homeland. Her suffering finally ends when her mask is returned to Dakar.
